Thousands of Filipinos are expected to take to the streets on November 30 at Luneta, EDSA, and other locations nationwide, calling for stronger government action and reforms in the wake of the ongoing flood control project investigation, the Kilusang Bayan Kontra Kurakot (KBKK) said on Wednesday.
The group credited citizens for participating in sustained protests following the September 21 rallies against corruption, noting that public pressure has been key in demanding accountability.
Calls for a Thorough, Transparent Investigation
The KBKK emphasized that all implicated individuals should be subject to a swift, in-depth, and transparent probe, including officials from the:
- Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)
- Department of Budget and Management (DBM)
- Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI)
- Contractors, district engineers, lawmakers, and other high-ranking officials
“Everyone involved… should undergo an in-depth, swift, and transparent investigation. No one should be protected, no one should be deemed a sacred cow,” the group said.
Accountability and Reform Measures
The KBKK stressed that resignation alone is insufficient. They are calling for:
- Criminal and civil cases against those responsible
- Restitution of plundered public funds
- Genuine reforms to safeguard government resources and prevent future corruption
Proposed reforms include:
- Abolition of the pork barrel in all its forms
- Prohibition of lump sum and illegal budget insertions
- Real-time public disclosure of all government projects and contracts
- Strengthened citizen participation in budget planning, approval, and monitoring
“These measures are essential to ensure transparency, accountability, and public trust in government projects,” the KBKK added.
Police Preparations
The Philippine National Police (PNP) said it is maintaining full alert status in anticipation of the nationwide protests, ensuring that safety and order are prioritized during the demonstrations.
