Corruption Surges to Filipinos’ #2 Concern Amid Flood Control Scandal

Public concern over government corruption has surged to its highest level in years, with 31% of Filipinos naming it a top national issue, according to a recent OCTA Research survey. This marks an 18-point increase from 13% in July and is the first time corruption has entered the top five national concerns in OCTA’s Tugon ng Masa (TNM) surveys. GMA Network

The uptick in concern coincides with a growing scandal involving alleged mismanagement and corruption in flood control projects across the country. Investigations have uncovered ghost projects, overpricing, and kickbacks, leading to public outrage and mass protests. The controversy has led to the resignation of several lawmakers and officials, as well as the freezing of assets linked to the scandal. The Guardian

Despite the rise in corruption-related concerns, controlling the rising prices of basic goods and services remains the top national concern for adult Filipinos. Other major concerns include access to affordable food, wages, and job creation. Xinhua News
