President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has reiterated the Philippines’ unwavering commitment to peace, stability, and the rule of law in the region, emphasizing the nation’s dedication to upholding its sovereignty and ensuring the safety of its personnel, vessels, and aircraft in the West Philippine Sea.
Speaking at the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, President Marcos highlighted the importance of a rules-based international order and the peaceful resolution of disputes. He affirmed that the Philippines will remain firm, calm, and resolute in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The President also underscored the nation’s commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as the legal framework governing maritime disputes.
In his address, President Marcos expressed concern over continuing incidents in the South China Sea, which have put the lives of Philippine personnel and the safety of vessels and aircraft at risk. He called for greater cooperation among ASEAN member states to ensure the peace and stability of the region.
The President also commended India’s consistent support for international law and the rule of law in the South China Sea, highlighting the growing strategic and economic relevance of India to ASEAN. He emphasized the shared interests between the Philippines and India in upholding maritime security and promoting regional stability.
